GARDIKI OMILAION

Gardiki Omilaion is a mountain village with an altitude of 1,050 m and is located only 60 km away from Lamia.
Crowned by a beautiful forest of fir and legs running Vistriza river (the ancient Inachos) emanating from Oxya Mountain.
It is the crossroads of the counties of Fthiotida - Evritania - Fokida and Aitoloakarnania.
It is built amphitheatrically, about 2 kilometers in length and crossed by a well-preserved public road.
From 1832 until 1912 it was the capital of the Municipality of Omilaion.
Today, it belongs to the Municipality of Makrakomi

GARDIKI'S NAME

Several versions have been reported for the origin of the name "Gardiki Omilaion".
Indicatively, one of these is that "Gardiki" means: "FORTRESS", "CITADEL", "CASTLE".
For the "Omilaion", however, different opinions have been also expressed about its origins.
Visit it and it will reward you with its authenticity!

THE RESIDENTS

The action of the inhabitants spread across all sectors,
and the Gardikians stood out in the arts,
science and generally in all areas of culture and trade.
Indicatively we mention that there was a 3-element primary school in Gardiki since 1878,
a separate faculty of girls with many students (which was unprecedented at that time) and a schoolhouse.

CUSTOMS & EVENTS

The two clubs of Gardiki organize many and varied events culminating in:
-The "Gathering of Gardikians" on July 26th at the site of the chapel of Agia Paraskevi in the forest and
-the "traditional festival" on August 15th in the central square of the village.
If you find yourself in the village these days, you will be thrilled by the traditional
dances of the swain dance group and the hospitality of the Gardikians.
